ThankOffering Sunday,
Ordinary to Extraordinary

Today and every day,
Lutheran World Relief quilts, kits and layettes
give families throughout
the world a helping hand, a sign of comfort, and hope for the future.
Quilts, pencils, soap,
needles and thread...
these ordinary things
become extraordinary when shared as gifts of love with people in need.
From your home to theirs,
these ordinary items make possible a ministry of extraordinary love.
This is Christian Love in
action!
Here at Messiah, we have a
small group of ladies, who assemble quilts twice a month.

It is a fun group!
We always welcome help,
both workers and materials.
In addition to the quilts,
we also assemble health kits and layettes.
"For good people, the
world is small," writes a Serbian refugee, in thanks for relief aid.
"Love, spirit and good
will, tie us together", the letter explains.
Perhaps more than anyone,
quilters know the truth of this statement;
as you stitch and tie
quilts, you make ties to the greater world around you!
With a spirit of love, you
sew connections to people around the globe.
An LWR quilt is special!
It brings warmth on a cold night, shelter
from the sun on a hot day.
It becomes a bed, a room divider, a backpack
to carry belongings, and at times even a home.
Quilts distributed by LWR to refugees and
other people in need
were first made by recycling old but good
clothes, blankets, and other items.
Most LWR quilts are still made this way,
although fabric samples, remnants, or other
new pieces of fabric are also used.
Each quilt is one of a kind, with a beauty
all its own, made as a gift of hope by caring people.

Clean
hands, good grooming, and shining smiles
are what you can bring about through the gift of health kits.
Items
needed for these kits include hand towels, washcloths,
soap, metal nail files, and Band-Aids.
People
who must flee their homes quickly
often do not have time to pack essential items.
Health kits can help refugees maintain
personal hygiene while living in exile.
Items may also contribute to a new start for
those who can return home.
Layettes let people know you care.

With layettes and other kits, you also
connect to people around the globe.
Mothers overseas thank mothers,
grandmothers, and others here for gifts that show love for a new life.
In refugee camps, hospitals, and villages
around the world,
gifts of layettes convey a warm welcome to
newborns and their mothers.
Baby sweaters, undershirts, sleepers,
receiving blankets,
cloth diapers, and diaper pins are needed
for layettes.
ThankOffering Sunday will be on November 22,
2009.
Monetary gifts are another way you can help,
if you are not able to go shopping.
Please make your checks payable to MLCW-LWR
Fund.
Also, a box is located in the narthex, for
your gifts.
The
will display the quilts, layettes, and
health kits on that day.
We will have a Silent Auction, for a special
quilt, after the service on Sunday, November 22nd.
